ADAPTS is a portable transfer sling designed for people with mobility disabilities and is intended for use in emergency situations on airplanes, or in everyday situations in a user’s home. There are six handles for up to six carriers. ADAPTS can be used to transfer an individual from the ground to a chair and a bed to a chair. It can also be used down stairs and through narrow tight space and can be folded into its own tote. ADAPTS can be used in the following configurations:

  1. For a narrow aisle with two rescuers head-to-foot: Two rescuers would be required. One behind the passenger on ADAPTS at their head and one in front at their feet. Gently lift by grasping two handles each and move toward nearest exit single file down the aisle.
  2. For a wider corridor or stairwell with two rescuers side-by-side: Gently lift by grasping two handles each from the side. One rescuer is on the left side of the passenger and one rescuer is on the right side of the passenger.
  3. For three rescuers or to provide better head support: Two rescuers at the head will share the top handle and grasp the handle closest to them on either the left or right of the passenger. The third will grasp the handles behind the knees and straddle the passenger’s legs while walking.
  4. Four rescuers: The pair at the top share the top handle and the handle nearest to them and the pair at the bottom share the bottom handle and the nearest handle to them.

To use: Passenger should be seated on the sling with the yellow side facing up. The ADAPTS logo should be at the top and pocket should be at the bottom. The black webbing is on the underside next to seat, bed, or floor. Handles should be free to grasp. Before lifting the passenger, ensure the lower handles fall behind the lower thigh just above the knees. Passenger’s arms should be crossed in front of them or with hands in lap. The tallest carrier should be at the bottom when possible to straddle the legs of the passenger. Carriers should always use proper body mechanics to avoid injury. Always lift from the knees. When ready to move with passenger, straighten arms to walk toward exits. Always follow all instructions from crew or emergency personnel during an evacuation.

Technical Specifications:

Materials: coated nylon fabric, flame-retardant, water-resistant, measures 11 inches by 11 inches by 2 inches folded

Weight: 1.15 pounds

Capacity: factory tested to carry 450 pounds

Care: Hand wash in warm soapy water or wipe soiled parts with a soapy sponge. DO NOT wash in a washing machine. Line dry. DO NOT place in a dryer. DO NOT iron the sling. Elastic at the top backside of the sling is to attach the sling to the top of a chair or airplane seat. If this interferes with the use of the onboard television for the passenger behind the ADAPTS user, the back of ADAPTS can be rolled down after takeoff and reattached for landing.

To refold after use: Start with the sling face up. Starting at the top, tuck the top handles in and fold the sling down toward the pocket. Continue folding as you tuck the lower handles in. Tuck into the pocket and seal with Velcro. Fold in half and seal with Velcro at the sides. Leave the bottom handle out to form a tote or tuck it into the folded sling.
